How Much Does a Composite Front Door Cost to Fit in Glasgow?

Most Glasgow homeowners pay somewhere between £1,200 and £2,200 for a composite front door, supplied and fitted. Where you land in that range depends less on the door itself than on your opening, your frame and the glass and hardware you choose. Here is how the costs break down, and what to check before you accept a quote.

Typical fitted prices around Glasgow

These are realistic ranges for a made to measure composite door with a new frame, fitting, removal of the old door and VAT included. They are a guide, not a quote, because every opening is different and prices vary between manufacturers and installers.

What moves the price up or down

The door slab is only part of the bill. Construction matters: a foam filled GRP door costs less than a 48mm solid timber core door, which feels heavier and more solid when it closes. Both perform well if they are fitted properly.

After that, the extras add up quickly. Decorative or triple glazed units, a colour that differs inside and out, a low aluminium threshold for level access, and hardware such as a long bar handle, a knocker or a smart lock can each add anything from £50 to £300.

Side panels and fanlights are the biggest single jump because they are separate glazed frames that have to be made, joined and sealed. If your existing door has them, expect the quote to reflect that.

Why Glasgow homes can cost more to fit

Housing stock here varies a lot, and the opening often decides the labour cost. A newer estate house in Newton Mearns or Cumbernauld usually has a standard sized opening in cavity brickwork, which is a straightforward job of around half a day.

Older sandstone villas and terraces in the West End, Southside or Dennistoun often have taller, wider openings with deep stone reveals and a fanlight. These need non standard sizes, more making good and sometimes plaster or timber repairs once the old frame comes out. Allow an extra £150 to £400 for that sort of work.

Tenement flat doors opening onto a common close are a separate case. Your title deeds or factor may have a say in appearance, and a door onto a shared stair may need to be fire rated, which costs noticeably more than a standard composite door. Check before ordering. If you live in a conservation area or a listed building, speak to Glasgow City Council planning first, as a change of front door may need consent.

What a proper quote should include

Quotes are only comparable if they cover the same things. A low figure that leaves out the frame or the finishing is not really cheaper. Ask for each of these in writing.

Common questions.

How long does it take to fit a composite front door?
A straightforward door and frame swap usually takes half a day. Doors with side panels, or openings in older stone properties that need making good, can take a full day.
Do I need planning permission for a new front door in Glasgow?
Most houses do not need it for a like for like replacement. If your home is listed, in a conservation area or a flat, check with Glasgow City Council planning, and your factor if you have one, before you order.
Is a composite door worth the extra over uPVC?
A composite door typically costs a few hundred pounds more than a uPVC panel door. In return you get a thicker, more rigid door that tends to hold its colour and shape better and feels more secure, which many people consider worth it for a front entrance.
